esch-belval
It is awe-inspiring to stroll around in the ever-evolving city of Esch-Belval. The juxtaposition of ultramodern architecture sitting alongside the now stabilised and preserved steel mills from a byegone era, creates a wholly unique atmosphere.
What in fact dominates the skyline are the giant blast furnaces, known as towers A and B. The last furnace was shut down in 1997. Soon after that the furnaces were then included on the Additional list of National Sites and Monuments in 2000.
it all starts with a scribble
All creations start with ideas being scribbled down on a piece of…well, whatever is available at that moment. Good ideas can come anywhere, be it on a bus, or in the sauna:)
The client, Arcelormittal, needed a bespoke gift for 100 of their former employees. I was naturally drawn to the iconic towers A & B, and the rest soon ensued, eventually leading to my "Miniature Blast Furnaces".
the metal smith
So from my initial scribbles, to the cardboard prototypes, the finished cut out finally makes its way to the metal smiths yard. Here it is laser cut into steel. The very material Arcelormittal's industry was once founded upon, to help remember the past and to be enjoyed in the future.
